Let’s Create a Sensory-Supportive Home in 2026!
Our focus on nutrition, exercise and medical care is important.
But how about our furkids’ sensory experiences?
What our dogs, cats and ‘rodent furry companions’ are exposed to hearing (“auditory stimuli”) and what they smell (“odor awareness”) is an often-underestimated center point of our pet’s life quality!

From my holistic perspective, grounding (see this newsletter (link)) and being aware that our pet’s senses are so much more sensitive than us humans, has more positive effects on their behavior, and quality of life, than we think!
The Auditory World of our Pets
Dogs and cats and also guineas and rabbits hear far more than we are able to. Their extremely sensitive abilities are designed to survive in nature.
“Background noise” to us is often rather overwhelming and stressing our pets.
Aside from TV and other entertainment sounds, vacuum cleaners, kitchen equipment (like blenders) and washing machines are, basically, daily noise assaults to pets.
Startling noises like doorbells, alarms and phone notifications are even worse for our pets than for us humans. Construction noise and traffic related sounds, including neighbor pets barking or fighting are not only scary but imbalance our furry companions deeply.
Repeated or unexpected noises cause anxiety, reactivity of digestion like pancreatitis or ‘simply’ a tendency to loose stools, nausea and inappetence. Sleep disturbances and stress-related urinary bladder problems like UTIs are also common physical effects on pets.

Holistic support tips and how I deal with noise exposure to my pets:
- We have created quiet zones (like a rather insulated cat/dog bedroom) where my pets can retreat to and are not disturbed
- Everyone in the house is reminded to be mindful and to keep phone and TV volume moderate
- We also all avoid sudden loud sounds as much as possible
- To calm them during renovations, thunder or firework times, we use soft, consistent sound (gentle music with nature sounds) to mask scary noises
- Our anxious pets all receive preventative calming natural Bach Flower Rescue Remedy which helps to regulate their nervous system
- We speak gently and firmly – to reassure our pets with our voices

The Powerful Sense of Smell
Unlike humans, our fur kid’s sense of smell is one of their primary ways of understanding the world.
Not only dogs experience life largely through scent! Cats and rabbits as well as guinea piggies assess safety, understand territory and work on social bonds by smells.
Strong or unfamiliar odors are really stressful, cause disorientation and can even physically irritate and harm our pets.
In our home we have long ago banned synthetic air fresheners and plug-ins. We only use essential oils, scented candles and incense near open windows and for restricted times. Our cleaning products contain no or natural smells. Perfumes and laundry fragrances are never used on or near our pets!
Aside from irritating my pet’s airways, fragrances can cause nausea (the urge to vomit) and even trigger behavior changes like “toilet accidents”.

My Holistic Support tips for minimizing scent-stress:
- Always keep some windows open for good ventilation, more so after cleaning
- No scented, only naturally mild cleaning products for daily use
- Absolutely no artificial fragrances (air fresheners or fabric softeners) in places we share with our cats and dog
- No strong aromas for home – this includes essential oils
- We respect our pet’s own scents— there is no overbathing or deodorizing of my pets!
Let’s remember that what smells “fresh” to us is likely overwhelming to our furkids.
They just can’t talk about it.

Holistic Takeaway:
2026 can be the best year ever, just by respecting our furkids’ sensory balance
The immediate benefits of creating a sensory-supportive home is regulation (balancing) of our pet’s nervous system.
This allows our pets to feel safe, grounded and relaxed
which is a crucial component for good life quality for:
- Senior (geriatric) pets – age 7 years and older
- Rescue animals
- Anxious and chronically ill pets
- Pets in pain
- Furkids recovering from surgery or traumatic health conditions like seizures

Small changes in 2026 that we can implement immediately —like lowering overall house noise levels, gentler (or no!) scents and predictable routines— start this year with a big positive impact on wellbeing & overall health.
Holistic care is about seeing the whole being – body and emotions and soul.
Being more aware of how sound and scent affect our pets, we create an environment that supports our furkids (and us humans, too!) quality of life.
A peaceful sensory world is a powerful form of medicine—one that begins right at home!
